About German International School Sydney
From Preschool to Year 12 students experience a complete education in a co-educational and multi-lingual environment, where the language of instruction is offered in both German and English. Our focus is to encourage our students to study a broad curriculum to achieve individual academic success while also fostering personal development in preparation for life beyond school.
No prior knowledge of the German language affords students of any age to begin a schooling career at the German International School Sydney (GISS). However, all students from three to 19 years old have the opportunity to learn multiple languages, as we boast a successful intensive language immersion program, leading to bilingual competency in both English and German. The Immersion program as well as Content and Language Integrated Learning are proven methods for teaching bilingualism and realising its cognitive advantages. This dual-focused educational approach is boosting students’ motivation to learn by allowing them to engage in authentic experiences in both German and English.
Our school’s curriculum (from Kindergarten to Year 10) is an accredited combination of both the Australian and German national curriculums. In Year 11 and 12 we offer the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme where personalised subject selections ensure the programme can be either, fully bilingual with the language of instruction being a combination of both German and English or, completed totally in English. Further, the IB Diploma is internationally recognised, and will give graduates an Australian ATAR and a German Abitur equivalent.
